Our progression after completing the Learn to Swim courses is broadly based on age:
- Novices (non-competitive, 12-and-under)
- Academy (12-and-under)
- Development (13-15)
- Juniors (19 and under)
- Seniors
- Masters – Development Squad (beginners)
- Masters – Advanced Squad
Although these are age-group driven teams, entry into competitions also requires that a swimmer achieves appropriate figure and routine grades. This means that a swimmer in a particular group may not yet qualify for participation in competitions.
It’s tricky to juggle the effort required to get swimmers to the grades that they need alongside practicing team routines for competitions, so every group will spend their Saturday pool time on a combination of grade practice, routines, routine walkthroughs and speed/stamina sessions.
Learn to Swim – Artistic Swimming
This is our session for swimmers who are under 18 and new to the sport. It covers Stages 8-10 of the Swim England Learn to Swim programme, for the Artistic Swimming discipline.
There is a waiting list for places on this course, which includes a 2-week taster session followed by a 12 week programme, with an assessment and a routine performed to an audience at the end.
Land training involves working on flexibility and splits, as well as learning key artistic swimming techniques such as walkthoughs and counting to music.
If you would like to attend a taster and be added to the waiting list for our next course, please fill in our Taster form.

Land training involves working on the flexibility that swimmers will need to pass the splits element of grading, as well as learning key artistic swimming techniques such as walkthoughs and counting to music.

Academy (Competitive 12-and-under)
This is the team that Novices will graduate to once they have reached a sufficient grade level to participate in competitions, but are still aged 12 or under. They continue to work on their splits and flexibility on land, and will be working on figure and routine qualifications up to grade 4 (although you have to be 13 to undertake a grade 4 assessment).
This team can enter regional competitions, and also the Combo Cup and the National Age Group Championships (NAGS).
- The Combo Cup has two divisions for 12-and-unders: Division 1 requires all swimmers to have Figure or Routine grades 0-2, and Division 2 requires Figure or Routine Grades 1-3.
- NAGS requires figure grade 3 to enter the figures competition, and additionally routine grade 3 for routines.
- Regional competition requirements are usually lower.
This team will be working on at least one routine. There are different sorts of routines – “Free” and “Combo”, with different requirements. This team is currently working on a Combo Routine (“Elvis”).
